Everyone was raving about this place online! So I went and dragged Jess F who had visited me from the US to try the coveted umami fried chicken that cannot be ordered to go. My friend and I ordered 2 pieces of chicken with a spice level of chemical, sweet potato waffles with miso butter, and a couple of hush puppies. Honestly, it sounds like something only hipsters could come up with but it was worth a shot.
Chemically spicy was not as spicy as I had expected it to be. I was kinda disappointed cause I was hoping mouth numbing, stomach aching, number 2 hurting pain. Other than not being as spicy, the chicken was perfectly cooked! The right amount of crisp and tender. I thought the real star of the show though were the sweet potato waffles. With a mix of miso butter and syrup, bam, perfect chewy waffle. They should specialize in those waffles. The hushpuppies were hushpuppies. Yum.
On a second visit I had the chance to try the dirty rice and corn but I found both of them quite ordinary so I think I’ll stick to the waffles and hush puppies next time. Gravy is also extra so definitely not making use of that as soup.
I found the great thing about dining here is the selection of other places around to mix things up. Like go divide and conquer with your friends or something or if you’re a food monster like me, just go and eat everything. They also give you an electronic buzzer which allows you to look for a table in the crowded hall while waiting. The lines can get long though and sometimes people just keep adding last minute orders which holds up everyone else. Don’t treat the line like it’s EDSA and you’re in rush hour traffic and you’re just chilling. Just no.
