It’s hard to go on Facebook without seeing photos of those glorious wagyu cubes. So I decided to venture to Kikufuji on my birthday (hint: it’s on February 30th) with a couple of friends because why not. Also, Erwan Heussaff likes this place so heeeyyyyyy. By the way, hi Erwan, we passed each other on a crosswalk once and I really wanted to ask for a picture but I also didn’t want to get run over by oncoming traffic. #priorities
I made a reservation for dinner on a Friday night and found that the non-smoking section was already full so we settled for the smoking section hoping that not a lot of people would be smoking and we got lucky! The non-smoking section has regular tables and seating at the bar while the smoking section features low tables and sitting on tatami mats. That was a little tough for me cause I had a previous knee injury but that’s a personal thing.
We ordered 3 chirashi dons, spicy tuna sashimi, a couple of wagyu cubes on the stick, an oolong hi, and a lemon hi. The have 3 different kinds of chirashi dons depending on a variety of local or imported fish. That they they only had local fish available that day. Sads. But the chirashi itself was very good. Fish was fresh, a good variety, and the rice had the perfect amount of tanginess you should expect from sushi rice. The spicy tuna was kinda disappointing. It was not as spicy as I expected it to be and while the tempura bits were a lovely addition for crunch, I don’t think it was mixed enough so that I could get enough smooth and crunch in the same bite. The wagyu sticks were as good as they looked! The perfect amount of pepper on those babies although dripping with a bit of oil. The cocktails were pretty standard but I appreciate that they offer them because not a lot of places here do.
Definitely coming back here since they have a wide selection of food depending on what you’re craving. At the end of out meal they also gave us free draft beer coupons that we will definitely use on our next visit!
